Mindset and Athletics

How mindset affects athletic performance

In The Two Mindsets, we examined Carol Dweck’s notion of fixed and growth mindsets. In the embedded video, we see how mindset affects athletic performance. We’ll see examples of “naturals”, such as Billy Beane, that didn’t succeed until they witnessed the growth mindset in action in other athletes, like Lenny Dykstra.

We’ll witness the way the media portrays “naturals” and how even when a champion surprises the world by having none of the characteristics of a natural, like Muhammed Ali did, the media just redefines what it means to be a natural. In Maury Wills, we’ll see an example of the perseverance that the growth mindset brings about and, in Bruce Jenner, we’ll learn how even naturals for whom athletics comes easily can learn to grow if they get a chance to overcome adversity somewhere in their life.

In Michael Jordan, we’ll see the impact of the growth mindset on career longevity and, in Tiger Woods, we’ll see how the growth mindset helps you to take charge of your own success.
